How to Show Up When Someone Searches “Near Me”

“Dentist near me.” “Chiropractor near me.” “Urgent care near me.” These are some of the most valuable searches a local business can rank for. The person typing them isn’t browsing — they’re ready to act right now. Here’s how to make sure they find you.

Near Me Searches Are Won on Google Maps, Not Your Website

When someone types “business type near me,” Google shows a map with 3 local listings before any website results. These 3 spots — called the Local Pack — capture the vast majority of clicks and calls. Your website alone won’t get you there. You need an optimized Google Business Profile.

Your Location Settings Must Be Accurate

Google uses the location of the searcher and the location of your business to determine who’s “near.” If your business address in your Google Business Profile doesn’t exactly match your real address — or if the map pin is placed incorrectly — you’ll rank lower for nearby searches even if you’re actually close.

Your Business Categories Must Match the Search

Google decides what searches to show your business for based largely on your chosen categories. If you’re a chiropractor but your primary category is set to “Health” instead of “Chiropractor,” you won’t show up for “chiropractor near me.” Your categories need to be specific and accurate.

Reviews and Proximity Work Together

Two main factors determine near me rankings: how close you are to the searcher and how trusted your business is. Proximity is fixed. But trust — built through reviews, a complete profile, and consistent information — is something you can improve. The more trusted Google considers your business, the larger the geographic radius where you’ll appear in near me results.

Your Service Area Settings Matter Too

If you serve customers at their location (like a mobile service) or across a broader area, your service area settings in Google Business Profile determine how wide your near me visibility extends. These need to be set correctly or you’ll miss searches from nearby neighborhoods you actually serve.
